31 Oct Dublin
In 2017, I visited Dublin for 4 days. Why only 4 days? Well, I had this awkward amount of time between my cheap intercontinental Westjet flight and an Airbnb booked in Barcelona. Hence the Google Flight search. I had a choice of 5 cities that were affordable and locations perfect for a 4 day “layover”. Copenhagen, Dublin, London, Palma de Majorca and Madrid. Crossing Madrid and London off the list, as I expected to be visiting them later in my travels, I had three options left. I chose Dublin for economic reasons, having no idea how much I would actually like it.
After my initial visit to Ireland I felt like I needed more. I only got to explore the city of Dublin, and spent no time seeing the countryside (which every Irish I meant talked about). Even at that, I definitely needed more time. Flash forward a year and a half and my mother asked me about my summer vacation plans. I wasn’t able to take time off in August, but when my mother had mentioned going to Ireland in September, I needed to go back!
Revisiting Dublin was a great experience. Being familiar with a major city, and having a good sense of directions makes sightseeing extremely efficient. Knowing what to do, and what not to do makes limited time very effective. This time around, I made sure I visited Kilmainham Gaol, Trinity College, and Christchurch Cathedral as I ran out of time last year.
- The main wing of Kilmainham Gaol
- Another view of the main wing of Kilmainham Gaol
- These were single prisoner cells for violent criminals.
- The courtyard inside the jail walls where prisoners used to “break stones” for free time.
- Tourists hiding from the rain at Trinity College
- Overgrown ivy covering the stone buildings.
- The famous library inside Trinity College. Students are allowed to view any of the literature on the walls.
- Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin
- Just a photogenic lady walking down a photogenic hallway.
